Grants Overview Types of Grants Process and Timeline Funded Studies

The Alzheimer's Association funds a wide variety of investigations by scientists at every stage of their careers. Each grant is designed to meet the needs of the field and to introduce fresh ideas in Alzheimer's research.

New grant categories


Neuronal Hyper Excitability and Seizures in Alzheimer’s Disease (NHESAD)
(4 pages)
Funds investigators whose work is aimed at the development of new pharmacological strategies to prevent or treat seizures and abnormal neural network activity in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), including the identification, screening and development of therapeutic strategies to reduce seizures and other types of abnormal neural network activity and at the evaluation of drug safety and efficacy at the preclinical and clinical levels

Development of New Cognitive and Functional Instruments (DNCFI) (3 pages)
Funds researchers whose work is aimed at investigation and development of cognitive or functional evaluation instruments that can capture the earliest changes in the disease, are sensitive to change over time, and/or could be used in clinical trials.

U.S.-U.K. Young Investigator Exchange Fellowship (5 pages)
Provides new investigators with funding to develop preliminary or pilot data, test procedures and develop hypotheses on an international level. Offered in partnership with the Alzheimer's Research Trust.

Grant opportunities to promote diversity


New Investigator Research Grant to Promote Diversity (NIRGD)
(3 pages)
Funds new investigators from diverse backgrounds with intent to support early career development that will lay groundwork for future research grants.

Mentored New Investigator Research Grant to Promote Diversity (MNIRGD) (4 pages)
Funds mentored research conducted by underrepresented researchers who have earned their doctoral degrees within the last 10 years.

The Zenith Fellows Award Program (2 pages)
Granted by a group of premier donors, the Zenith Fellows, to support senior scientists who have made significant contributions to the field of Alzheimer's and continue to pursue promising, innovative approaches to early detection, causes, treatment or prevention.

New Investigator Research Grant (NIRG) (2 pages)
Funds the next generation of promising scientists who have earned their doctoral degrees within the last 10 years.

Investigator-Initiated Research Grant (IIRG) (2 pages)
Funds established investigators exploring questions across the entire research spectrum from basic neurobiology to treatment, prevention and care.

Everyday Technologies for Alzheimer Care (ETAC) Grants (5 pages)
Awarded to support research that explores how technology can be used to better meet the needs of individuals with Alzheimer's and their caregivers.

Conference Grants (3 pages)
Awarded to institutions/foundations/organizations, etc. that seek funding for the costs associated with planning and hosting a conference.
