Alzheimer's Disease to cost United States $20 trillion over next 40 years
A new report from the Alzheimer’s Association, "Changing the Trajectory of Alzheimer’s Disease: A National Imperative" shows that in the absence of disease-modifying treatments, the cumulative costs of care for people with Alzheimer’s from 2010 to 2050 will exceed $20 trillion, in today’s dollars.

 New report says African-Americans and Hispanics more likely to have Alzheimer's disease than Whites
According to the Alzheimer’s Association’s® 2010 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, African-Americans are about two times more likely and Hispanics are about one and one-half times more likely than their white counterparts to have Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Although whites make up the great majority of the more than five million people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, African-Americans and Hispanics are at higher risk for developing the disease.

Social Security Administration Considers Adding Alzheimer’s To Its Compassionate Allowances List 
For people under age 65 with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia, their cognitive impairment can quickly reach a point where they can no longer maintain gainful employment. The Alzheimer’s Association applauds the Social Security Administration (SSA) for holding a hearing today to examine whether these individuals with younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias should be included in its Compassionate Allowances Initiative.

Total healthcare costs are more than three times higher for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias than for other people age 65 and older, according to the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2009 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, released today.

Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) to Co-chair Bipartisan Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer’s Disease
The Alzheimer’s Association is pleased that Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) has agreed to co-chair the bipartisan Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer’s Disease. Warner joins existing co-chairs Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Reps. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Chris Smith (R-N.J.). Warner will contribute his own significant knowledge of Alzheimer issues to the Task Force’s commendable work in advancing Alzheimer research and awareness.

Congress Approves $10 Billion in Scientific Research Funding
The Alzheimer’s Association commends Congress for passing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which will provide a much needed $10 billion increase in funding for National Institutes of Health (NIH) for research — the largest funding increase for NIH in 5 years. For the more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, this investment is a significant first step in working to bring scientific breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s and other major chronic diseases to fruition.

New Statement to Medical Community Demands a Dignified Diagnosis of Dementia
In recognition of the changing landscape of Alzheimer’s, the Alzheimer’s Association hosted four regional town hall meetings with more than 800 participants, including 300 people living with the disease. The 2008 report Voices of Alzheimer’s Disease examined the rich dialogue at these town halls and identified diagnostic challenges and dissatisfying interactions with the medical community as two major challenges articulated by people living with the disease. The new, innovative Principles for a Dignified Diagnosis are insights from people living with the disease on how to improve that experience.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2008 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, an estimated 5.2 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s and this number is expected to grow to 16 million by midcentury. With an aging baby boomer population, this degenerative brain disease will continue to touch more lives. More funding for research and more supportive services for those living with Alzheimer’s disease begins with greater overall public awareness. The Alzheimer’s Association commends the U.S. Postal Service because this new stamp is a tremendous step in that education effort.

“Alzheimer’s Disease: Early Detection Matters” Project Receives Most Votes in Members Project From American Express
The “Alzheimer’s Disease: Early Detection Matters” campaign has been selected as the top campaign in the Members Project from American Express and will receive $1.5 million. The Alzheimer’s Disease: Early Detection Matters campaign received more than 24,101 votes from American Express card members as the project they would most like to see funded.

Husband Seeks Votes for “Alzheimer’s Disease:  Early Detection Matters” Project
The “Alzheimer’s Disease: Early Detection Matters” campaign has been selected as one of the top five campaigns in the Members Project from American Express, which will award $1.5 million to the program that receives the most votes through Monday, October 13.  The submitter, Jay Smith, whose wife has early onset Alzheimer’s disease, along with the Alzheimer’s Association, are now asking that card members go to the members project site and vote for the Alzheimer’s Disease: Early Detection Matters campaign.

New Study Shows Cognitive and Social Activity in Midlife May Reduce Dementia Risk in Men
Participation in a range of cognitively and socially engaging activities in midlife reduced risk for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in men, particularly those at elevated genetic risk for the disease, according to a new study published in the September 2008 issue of Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association. The authors suggest that the new study “supports the ‘use it or lose it’ hypothesis in aging men.”

Inspirational holiday cards painted by individuals in the early stages of Alzheimer’s are now available through the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org/shopforthecause.  Four different sets of holiday cards are available: one for Thanksgiving, one for the New Year and two different selections for the holidays.

 Stigma Cited As Top Concern Of People Living With Alzheimer's Disease
Hundreds of people living in the early stage of Alzheimer’s stated that the stigma associated with the disease is one of their top concerns during town hall meetings that the Alzheimer’s Association held across the nation. The Alzheimer's Association released “Voices of Alzheimer’s Disease: Summary Report on the Nationwide Town Hall Meetings for People with Early Stage Dementia” at the 16th annual Dementia Care Conference.
